As most of you know I have been studying for my GED. Well I have figured out what I would like to do once that is out of the way. Medical Massage Therapist! Thats right, you read correctly! I am actually pretty excited about this. I have looked into the Utah College of Massage Therapy and they have this program:
The Professional Massage Therapy Program
Time Frame
Day: 30 weeks / 7 monthsEvening: 50 weeks / 12 months
Hours
815.5 Clock Hours / 51 Quarter CreditsThe Professional Massage Therapy Program prepares students to become successful practicing bodyworkers. The Program exceeds standards set by national certification, and by most state and municipal governments for licensing.
The Professional Massage Therapy Program teaches the art and science of massage therapy, while also teaching sound business practices which prepare students for success in the marketplace.
In the Professional Massage Therapy Program, students learn light energy work as well as deep-tissue modalities, Eastern as well as Western theory and technique, and how to treat specific pain and dysfunction, along with a holistic approach to health and healing.
Students learn basic massage theory and technique through traditional Swedish massage. Students are taught an Eastern paradigm of body therapies which includes Shiatsu and Acupressure. Students also learn contemporary modalities such as structural bodywork, trigger-point therapy, sports massage, injury massage, and cranial sacral therapy.
Integrated with the massage therapy and bodywork training are remedial exercises, passive stretching, body awareness, relaxation techniques, and body mechanics. To further support good body mechanics, students receive a course in movement for the massage therapist. In all bodywork modality classes, students are coached in the best use of their own bodies while doing the work. It is possible that a therapist can actually be energized and gain vitality as a result of the work. We endeavor to create this experience for our students.
The Utah College of Massage Therapy teaches Anatomy and Physiology in order for students to have a solid technical, scientific understanding of the body and a way to communicate with other health care professionals.
Due to the fact that we are training health care practitioners we include CPR certification training and First Aid in our Professional Massage Therapy Program curriculum.
The Utah College of Massage Therapy not only prepares students to become proficient bodyworkers but also trains students to become successful in the marketplace, either as a sole practitioner, an independent contractor, or an employee.
As part of the Professional Massage Therapy Program curriculum, students complete a comprehensive Professional Development course. This course includes techniques of enrollment, starting and operating a massage therapy business, presentation, advertising, résumé writing, job interviewing skills, and the integration of sound business practices with a holistic approach to health care. Students also participate in the Clinical Internship, which provides them with on-the-job training in preparation for working professionally.
Each student graduates with 119 hours of practical, hands-on application. During the Clinical Internship portion of the program, each student works a series of 5.5 hour shifts during which they have the opportunity to give as many as five 50-minute massages. Through the Clinical Internship, our students learn stamina, consistency, and the importance of making the last massage of the day as good as the first.
There is another course that I can take along side this that would put me in the "medical" aspect of this. I can't really remember the specifics at the moment. I talked to one of the people that worked there last week and he was telling me about it. So my goal is to get this time consuming GED studying done and out of the way and then go take that test then hopefully, keep you fingers crossed, start this program in Sept.
I was a little apprehensive at first just because for some reason I just kept picturing big, stinky, hair men and that is just gross but I think I can handle it. If I can handle massaging John's feet I can handle anything!!!! I am so excited about this! I can't wait! I think this is a perfect fit for me. :)
I stopped watching Wesley on Friday, Kristi unfortunately lost her job, :( but I was ending that anyway on the first of April. Now I can just focus that much more on my GED stuff to get it done twice as fast!
